Championship drag racing team owner Don Schumacher once spotted Leah Pritchett racing Nostalgia Funny Cars and brought her to Indianapolis for a test session prior to the U.S. Nationals. She proceeded to earn her NHRA Nitro Funny Car license with Don Schumacher Racing. That was eight years ago. At this years U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend, Pritchett raced her Don Schumacher Racing Top Fuel car into the NHRAs six-race Countdown to the Championship for the first time.Pritchett entered nationals tied with Terry McMillen for 10th in points. Both drivers were eliminated in the first round, but because Pritchett outqualified McMillen by six positions (she was 10th; he was 16th), she beat him by one point for the final Countdown position.Actions speak louder than words, Pritchett said. I said I was going to make the Countdown and we did. Im going to give everybody one hell of a run for their money for this championship.By Pritchett making the Countdown, which begins Friday at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina, all eight DSR teams are in title contention: four in Top Fuel and four in Funny Car. It is Pritchett, however, who is the surprise of the group.?Four races into the season, Pritchetts team, owned by Bob Vandergriff Jr., abruptly shut down. After the unexpected death of the teams financial backer and C&J Energy Services founder Josh Comstock, Vandergriff announced his retirement. Pritchett hastily put together a deal for the Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX with Lagana Family Racing, but she had nothing solidified for the next event. Pritchett then turned to Schumacher.I went ahead and hired Leah, even though I didnt have a car for her to race, Schumacher said. I did put a team together a couple of races later. Shes been employed by me ever since the Atlanta race [in May].Pritchett was responsible for obtaining the teams funding -- $125,000 per race. That money pays for things such as parts, fuel, per diem for crew members and hotel rooms. In the first 18 races this season, she missed only one because of a lack of a sponsor. She currently has sponsors for four of the six Countdown events, but Schumacher has assured her shell be at all of them.Schumacher supplies the cars, which have to be built, the transporter for them and the full-time crew at the shop to build and prepare the cars.Im very impressed by her effort, hard work to get that done [acquire funding] and her willingness to do anything necessary sponsorship-wise, Schumacher said. Shes a talented driver, quick on the starting line. Shes very good with TV, very good with sponsors and a very good teammate, which is very important to my organization. She needs to fit in with everyone, and she does a very good job of that. It makes a great situation.Deb Williams is a North Carolina-based writer and former editor. But when it comes to determining if Raymond will find a place on the Leafs roster when training camp concludes in a week, well, that decision will ultimately fall to the head coach.Michael Cheika says some of Australias European-based players may skip the three-Test series against England in June due to their heavy workload through the club season. Cheika spoke to several Wallabies players during a trip to Europe where he watched Six Nations matches, and while they were all keen to play this season it might not be against England. The Australia coach says it is unlikely players who had completed a full European season would be considered for the England series, and would instead be held back for the Rugby Championship later in the year. Among the overseas-based players whose fitness will be managed are France-based backs Drew Mitchell and Matt Giteau, prop Sekope Kepu, scrum-half Will Genia and utility back Adam Ashley-Cooper. Matt Giteau and Adam Ashley-Cooper could be rested for the Wallabies three-Test series against England Guys who have had a full season, its unlikely they will be playing in June and thats a good opportunity for us to get some new players in because were very keen to grow the base of players that can really contribute to the team, Cheika said. The only way to do that is to give them opportunities and then after they (the overseas-based players) have had a bit of a break at the end of their season, well look at selection for the Rugby Championship.Meanwhile, Cheika shrugged off Australias struggles in Super Rugby this season and hit back at critics for being too pessimistic about the local game. The Waratahs have lost four of their opening seven Super Rugby fixtures Four of Australias five Super Rugby teams are in the doldrums, with only the conference-topping Melbourne Rebels exceeding expectations at the midway point of the season.I am not concerned at all, said Cheika. I only see opportunity all the time I watch the bboys play.ddddddddddddI am not going to say its all going swimmingly. We would like to have a few more wins as a nation, for sure. But one thing I learned in Super Rugby is that the season goes for 18 rounds and there is a still way to run. There is a lot of carry-on from people who have a different agenda or maybe theyve had too many years of negativity and they cant break the cycle, instead of just saying this is a game of footy, I am going to enjoy it. Check out the best tries from round nine of Super Rugby Cheika gave special backing to former captain and flanker Michael Hooper, who was heavily criticised by Australias first World Cup-winning coach Bob Dwyer as being a non-event in Super Rugby this season.I dont need to go on the record about what I think about Michael Hooper; I think it will be seen through my selections, said Cheika.Watch Englands series in Australia live on Sky Sports 1 HD, starting with the first Test on June 11.
