MOSCOW - Samantha Stosur beat her doubles partner Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-4 to line up Simona Halep of Romania in the Kremlin Cup final on Saturday. Stosur will play for her second title in two weeks. Halep routed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-2, 6-1 to advance to her fifth final this season. In the mens semifinals, top-seeded Richard Gasquet defeated Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 7-4, 7-5, while qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan upset defending champion Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. Kuznetsova couldnt hold serve once in the first set, winning just six of 23 points when serving, while Stosur was broken twice as well. Stosur took a 5-1 lead in the second but then failed to serve out the match twice. "At the start we were both struggling to hold serve and she had love-40 again on me and my second service again and I was able to get out of that," Stosur said. "And I think that gave me a little bit of a head up, and to win that first set 6-2 was good. It was still pretty tight all the way through." Stosur sealed the victory on her second match point when the Russian sent a shot wide. Stosur won her second title of the season and fifth of her career in Osaka, Japan, last Sunday. The Australian was runner-up to Caroline Wozniacki here last year. The 18th-ranked Halep, who has won the first four titles of her career this season, jumped out to 4-0 in both sets against Pavlyuchenkova. The Romanian sealed the victory on her second match point when Pavlyuchenkova double-faulted. "The score, it looks like it was very easy, but it wasnt," Halep said. "I moved very well and I hit the ball very strong. She didnt move very well. Id like to win my years fifth final but it will definitely be a hard task as Samantha is a top player in good form." The 10th-ranked Gasquet, still vying for the eighth and final spot in the ATP Finals next month, constantly beat Karlovics serve-and-volley play with passing shots, and broke the Croat once in each set. The Frenchman served a winner to close the match. The 102nd-ranked Kukushkin and Seppi traded sets before Kukushkin took a 4-1 lead in the decider and served for the match at 5-3. Seppi broke back only to fall 40-love down on his serve in the next game. Kukushkin broke again when the Italian sent a shot into the net. "I havent played in an ATP semifinals or finals for three years, so I desperately wanted to win," Kukushkin said. "In the tight end of the third set I had a stronger desire to win and it decided the match." Kukushikin reached his first final since winning his only title in St. Petersburg in 2010 and is the first qualifier to reach the final in Moscow since Paul-Henri Mathieu won the title in 2002. Simpsons lawyers submitted a supersized appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court, seeking the former football stars release from prison and a new trial in his 2007 Las Vegas armed-robbery case. The lawyers met a midnight Wednesday deadline to submit a request for the court to review Simpsons claim that 2008 trial in Las Vegas was tainted by his fame and notoriety following his 1995 acquittal in Los Angeles in the deaths of his ex-wife and her friend. However, the document totalled 19,993 words, court spokesman Michael Sommermeyer said Thursday. That was some 43 per cent longer than the 14,000-word limit the court had set. It will be up to the seven justices to decide whether to accept it for filing and consideration. Until that time, the document hasnt been made public. The court hasnt decided whether to hear oral arguments. Simpson, 66, is serving nine to 33 years in a northern Nevada prison after being found guilty of leading a group of armed men in a September 2007 confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas casino hotel. He was convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and other charges. Hes not eligible for parole until late 2017. The appeal stems from arguments rejected last year by Clark County District Judge Linda Marie Bell that Simpsons trial attorney botched Simpsons trial and first appeal to the state Supreme Court, the only appeals court in Nevada. Simpson attorney Patricia Palm said the apppeal ran long because she and attorneys Ozzie Fumo and Tom Pitaro were responding in detail to the judges Nov.dddddddddddd. 26 ruling, which totalled 101 pages. Palm said the state high court routinely accepts oversized filings in complex cases. She also submitted 36 appendices to the appeal brief. Bells ruling came after she held five days of hearings in Las Vegas on a 94-page petition that Palm filed in May 2012 seeking a new trial on 22 possible grounds. The judge said she reviewed the entire Simpson court record and determined that evidence was overwhelming that Simpson orchestrated the armed kidnapping and robbery, and that Simpsons current attorneys failed to demonstrate how his former lawyers actions changed the outcome of the case. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said he was confident that Bells ruling would be upheld. Wolfsons wife, former Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass, presided over Simpsons 2008 trial and sentencing. Simpson claimed he was trying to retrieve from the memorabilia dealers items that had been stolen from him after his Los Angeles trial and a 1997 civil court a wrongful-death judgment that put him on the hook for $33.5 million to the estates his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. The NFL hall of famer testified last year that he thought he had a right to get his own belongings back, and he never knew any of the men with him were carrying guns.
